A Brazilian influencer has made the decision to undergo a costly vaginal rejuvenation procedure where she is ready to spend more than $19,000 (around Rs 16 lakh) in hopes of "becoming a virgin again."
Ravena Hanniely, a 23-year-old model, has opted for hymenoplasty, a procedure where doctors surgically restore the hymen by stitching together the torn edges with dissolvable stitches. This procedure, which mimics the hymen's pre-bleed state, holds deep symbolic value for Hanniely, symbolising "a fresh start" both in her personal and professional life.
"The procedure holds a special meaning for me," Hanniely told Jam Press. "I want to become a virgin again. This is for my self-esteem and for personal reasons that have always been important to me," the model added.
Hanniely, who has over 2.5 lakh followers on Instagram, mentioned that the procedure offers psychological benefits. "It's about how a woman feels and what she wants for herself."
While she hasn't scheduled the surgery yet, Hanniely is "fully dedicated to ensuring everything goes well."
While Hanniely knows that not everyone will understand her decision, she believes people should respect personal choices.
"Unfortunately, not everyone can understand or support such intimate choices. We need to stop judging and start respecting these decisions," the model said.
"I will follow medical advice, such as avoiding physical exertion, abstaining from intimacy for the recommended period and choosing comfortable clothing," she said.
Hanniely is confident in her decision but the procedure has raised concerns among medical professionals. Dr Hana Salusollia, CEO of London-based Medisonal Clinic, told the New York Post that hymenoplasty is a recognised cosmetic surgery but it doesn't truly restore virginity.
What is Hymenoplasty?
Hymenoplasty, also referred to as hymen repair surgery, involves stitching the torn edges of the hymen using dissolvable sutures. The procedure is often chosen for personal or cultural reasons. Hanniely described her decision as a way to restore her self-esteem and achieve a personal milestone.
Hymenoplasty Risks
According to Dr Salusollia, the procedure involves potential risks such as infection, scarring and minor bleeding which can occur both during and after the procedure. There could be issues with healing and dissatisfaction with the results.
"These risks can be reduced if performed in compliance with ethical standards by top surgeons," said the physician.
Dr Salusollia also pointed out that the decision not only poses risks for physical health but also raises ethical questions. She believes that patients should make these decisions based on their own wishes without feeling pressured by society.
"It also raises huge ethical questions and patients should be encouraged to be empowered to make their own ethical choice rather than feeling forced due to societal pressures. Informed consent is critical as these decisions intersect with cultural and psychological dimensions," she said.
