Goverdhan Keshwani writes an average of about 20 to 30 condolence letters a day and has maintained a detailed record of over 46,000.
He even makes his family members write on his behalf when he is ill.
He writes to every bereaved family he reads about in local newspapers and says he has received over 4,000 letters from people thanking him for his comforting words.
Mr Keshwani said: "In fact, many relationships have grown so strong they now invite me to family functions and marriages like a family member."
The Jaipur resident says he has wanted to share people's grief since his father died.
His first letter was in 1991 following the assassination of former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi when he wrote to the politician's widow.
Mr Keshwani said: "Since he died at an early age, I felt very sad. I wanted to share the grief with his family and so wrote my first letter to his wife and family."
