The attack on Iraq by coalition forces has proved that the America and the Britain do not have an iota of respect and regard for international institutions like the United Nations (UN). While the world is condemning the American action in Iraq, the duo is steamrolling its way towards Baghdad, supported by biased western media reportage.
To attack Iraq without the UN’s nod and before the submission of the final report by the weapon inspectors on the existence of weapons of mass destruction shows that duo was simply wanting to invade that country with or without justification. We all have seen weapon inspectors telling the TV channels that they needed more time to reach at conclusion regarding the weapons of mass destruction.
Iraq is a sovereign country and its people have the fullest of rights to determine as to who would rule them. In no way the Americans can declare themselves to be repositories of all morality and democracy. If there was a dictator Saddam Hussein ruling Iraq, it was a subject that was required to be dealt by the people of Iraq and no one else.
The Iraqi incident is indicative of the fact that in the days to come, the Americans and British would be deciding about the fate of regimes in other countries. Those not pliable would be branded as the ones manufacturing weapons of mass destruction or harbouring terrorists linked to Al Qaida so as to provide “justification” to topple them.
It would be too simplistic to summarise that the duo initiated war to control oil wells of Iraq. The Americans had many other sources to get their supplies of oil with many Gulf countries being more than willing to replenish American stores. Even after winning the war, it would not be possible for the Americans to pocket and walk away with oil wealth of Iraq in view of the international focus.
In reality, the aim of unscrupulously branding Iraq as rogue state seems to do away with a powerful leader like Saddam Hussein who refused to toe the American line. The invading duo desperately wants to impose a puppet government in that country so that the Americans and the British were able to further their interests in the region from time to time.
The Americans seem to be forgetting that by unilaterally invading Iraq, they have turned their own supporters into critics. The fear is that certain fundamentalist sections among the Muslims would like to present it to be a case of Christian America attacking the Muslim Iraq. If that comes about in the near future, it would renege against the concept of a peaceful world order.
How foolishly some had thought that the cold war and hostile atmosphere in the world would end with the “dilution” of the USSR. The verbal cold war did end, no doubt. But, just look at the behaviour and conduct of USA after the USSR decided to bring about “Prestroika and Glasnosts.” A weaker USSR (now Russia) means a more belligerent USA.
Imagine, had there been in existence a USSR – as before – would ever America think of ignoring the advise of the Russian president on the matter. The present Russian incumbent, V. Putin did thunder but Americans did not pay any heed and went on to attack Iraq. One is reminded of 1971 war between India and Pakistan when the Americans – to help the then Pakistan dictator Yahya Khan - ordered their Navy to get into Bay of Bengal and Indian Ocean to pressurise India. Pat had come a reply with USSR declaring that it was ordering its frigates to immediately reach the Indian waters to help a friend in need. The Americans then did not dare to carry out their threat.
After Iraq, what then should be the reaction from those like Germany, France, Russia, India etc opposed to the bullish behaviour of Americans?
In my opinion, the world leaders need to plan out a strategy to isolate the Americans and the British from the world forums possibly by scaling down economic and social ties with the belligerent duo. Let there be restrictions on American multinationals from investing in other countries, or selling their products in the world market and denial of free access visas to American and British travellers. This kind of boycott needs to continue till the duo apologises for their actions and promise to work under the guidance of the United Nations.
