A 49-year-old Brazilian man sold his belongings and travelled nearly 1,900 kilometres in the hope of meeting the woman he believed could become his life partner. However, his journey ended in heartbreak when he discovered that the woman he had fallen for online was not a real person but an artificial intelligence (AI)-generated character.
Edimar Rocha Martins, a bricklayer from Imperatriz in Brazil's northeastern state of aravelled to Belo Horizonte, the capital of Minas Gerais, after becoming captivated by a social media personality known as Jéssica Oliveira, also called Jessica Fazendeira.
According to reports by NDTV and Hindustan Times, the woman's social media profile featured videos portraying an idyllic rural lifestyle on a farm. The account reportedly had more than 300,000 followers and featured messages inviting men to live with her, with promises of accommodation and financial support.
How the Brazilian Man Fell for the AI-Generated Woman
Martins reportedly came across the social media account in 2020. Following the death of his mother, he had been struggling with loneliness and hoped to find companionship and a fresh start in life.
The videos featuring Jéssica gradually caught his attention. In some clips, the woman presented herself as a farm owner looking for a partner and suggested that a man who joined her could enjoy a new life without financial worries.
Martins eventually became convinced that he had found someone with whom he could build a future.
According to reports, he decided to travel to Belo Horizonte to meet her in person. On October 9, he sold his belongings to finance the journey. After spending more than a day travelling by bus, he arrived in the city on October 11, expecting to meet the woman he hoped to marry.
Dream Shattered After Reaching His Destination
Things took a devastating turn when Martins arrived in Belo Horizonte and attempted to locate Jessica.
Carrying photographs of the woman, he reportedly approached people in the city and asked whether they recognised her. However, nobody could identify her.
He eventually sought help from a local radio station, where he learnt that the woman he had travelled so far to meet did not exist as a real person. Her online identity and videos had been created using artificial intelligence.
The revelation left Martins devastated. He had spent his money on the journey and was now stranded far from home, without the resources he needed to return.
Speaking about his disappointment, Martins expressed sadness and discouragement, explaining that he had travelled because, like many people, he wanted a relationship and companionship.
Account Operator Admits the Character Was AI-Generated
The person operating the social media account subsequently acknowledged that the woman portrayed in the videos was AI-generated. The operator reportedly claimed that the account was intended to generate engagement and denied having direct conversations with Martins or personally inviting him to Belo Horizonte.
The incident highlights how realistic AI-generated images and videos can create convincing online personalities. When such accounts make promises of love, companionship or financial security, vulnerable users may mistake fictional characters for genuine people.
Authorities Step In to Help Stranded Man
After spending his money on the trip, Martins reportedly sought assistance from local authorities in Belo Horizonte.
Municipal support services helped him with essentials, including food, access to shower facilities and a bus ticket. Reports also said that he was staying with a relative following the ordeal.
Despite the disappointment, Martins has reportedly not abandoned his hopes of finding a partner.
His experience serves as a reminder that social media profiles can be fabricated with increasingly sophisticated AI tools. Before making major financial decisions or travelling to meet someone encountered online, it is important to verify their identity through independent means.
In Martins' case, what began as a search for love turned into a painful lesson about the risks of trusting an online persona without confirming whether the person behind it actually exists.
