B'wood Movies, Ahead Of Time

B'wood Movies, Ahead Of Time

We have been made to believe that most film directors like to stick to formula films.

However, there have been movie makers down the ages that have made movies so futuristic, so ahead of their times, that thy make very good sense even today and will continue in their relevance for decades to come.

Take a look!

Mera Naam Joker

The 1970 Hindi film directed by Raj Kapoor was the debut of Rishi Kapoor.

Mera Naam Joker is a film about a clown who must make his audience laugh at the cost of his own sorrows. The film is reportedly inspired by Raj Kapoor's own life and the clown an allegory for his own life as an actor.

It bombed at the BO but was Raj Kapoor's Magnum opus.

Today, its considered a landmark film.

Janam

Every writer/director takes something from his own life while creating a story or a film.

Mahesh Bhatt can be credited in creating an impression that so many films, he made or came out of his production house, are based on his own life.

Arth, Saransh, Janam, Zakhm and Wo Lamhe all have something coming from his real life.

In Janam, he explored the fact of his illegitimate birth.

Maqbool

Is a masterpiece on many accounts.

First, it defies the set formulae of Bollywood of a hero and a heroine falling in love and making rounds of trees with dozens of other dancers. It also doesn't have a battle between the good and the bad.

It is a film where the bad meets the worse.

Boom

Kaizad Gustad's Boom was most certainly unfairly reviewed and on the whole misunderstood by most at the time of its release.

As time has gone on, and we've seen Hindi cinema really start to come of age with diverse and different movies, BOOM is a movie that certainly is easier to appreciate now for what it is then it was when it was made.

Lamhe

The film, released in 1991 was directed by Yash Chopra. The film was critically acclaimed, had exceptional music and did brilliant business in UK.

Unfortunately, it was not a box-office success in India. It is one of the few films that picked up The Best Film award at Filmfare despite its lacklustre business.

Kya Kehna

Kya Kehna looks at the issue of pre-marital sex among teens rationally and without moral posturing.

It simply portrays the plight of a girl who has a pre-marital affair and gets pregnant.

Kya Kehna is a film which deals with several sociological themes at different levels. Kundan Shah's film was with the times then and even more significant now than it was when made in 2001.

Aks

There are no easy answers to the question, 'What is Rakeysh Om Prakash Mehra's Aks all about?'

The response to the film can range from 'It's a copy of Face Off' to 'It's a supernatural film about a spirit that dominates a human being'.

Or the reaction could be as vague as: 'It's about a bunch of weird people.' The entire film was an allegory, too ambiguous, and the theme, although it is rooted in the eternal conflict, too futuristic for the Indian audiences.
