Bollywood and its Romance with Period Movies

Bombay Velvet is all ready to set the cash registers ringing at the Box Office later this week. This period drama starring Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma is already receiving positive reviews for its extensive sets, fine acting, and unique storytelling. We look at a few other period dramas that took us back to the golden past.

Asoka

SRK's Asoka, released in 2001, was about the Mauryan King by the same name. Focusing on the known details of his life, the movie did average business on the Box Office.

The Rising: Ballad of Mangal Pandey

Playing Mangal Pandey, the iconic figure of the 1857 uprising did little good to the career of Aamir Khan. The movie was a flop, but who can forget the mass hysteria that surrounded it before its release.

Jodhaa Akbar

This was the first movie in a long time to hit the bull's eye. Spectacular acting by its lead pair and brilliant direction took this movie to every household. Hrithik and Ashutosh Gowariker are already working on their next period collaboration, Mohenjodaro.

Hey Ram

Starring Kamal Haasan, SRK, and Rani Mukherji, this movie was on the receiving end of critical acclaim and appreciation. Set in the British Raj, this fictional drama had Bollywood icons in key roles.

Once Upon A Time in Mumbai

Starring Ajay Devgn and Emraan Hashmi, the movie was celebrated for its music and dialogues. While its sequel fell flat on the box office, even today the performances in this film are appreciated by audiences.

Shootout at Wadala

A little closer to the contemporary times, Shootout at Wadala was a story of the noted gangster, Manya Surve, and his tryst with the Mumbai Police and underworld dons. Starring John Abraham, this movie did average business at the box office.
