Remembering Nana Patekar – 10 Masterclass Performances That Defined Indian Cinema

Few actors in the history of Indian cinema command the screen with the sheer, unadulterated intensity of Nana Patekar. Eschewing the conventional trappings of traditional Bollywood stardom, Patekar built an iconic career on blistering dialogue delivery, piercing silences, deep social consciousness, and a fierce commitment to complex, flawed characters. Here are 10 of his most highly appreciated films and why his performances in them remain absolute masterclasses in acting.

Parinda (1989)

The Film: Vidhu Vinod Chopra's gritty, poetic underworld drama about two brothers caught in the brutal crossfire of Mumbai's gang wars.

Why It's Appreciated: Patekar played Anna Kalsekar, a psychotic, germophobic, and deeply unstable underworld don. Unlike the suave, polished villains of earlier decades, Patekar turned Anna into a terrifyingly unpredictable monster. His twitchy mannerisms, sudden bursts of terrifying violence, and chilling dialogue delivery earned him a National Film Award and completely redefined the Bollywood antagonist.

Krantiveer (1994)

The Film: Mehul Kumar's explosive social-action drama about a displaced, cynical vagabond who takes the law into his own hands to fight rampant systemic corruption.

Why It's Appreciated: As Pratap Tilak, Patekar delivered one of the most blistering, politically charged performances in commercial Hindi cinema. His fiery, impassioned courtroom monologue railing against societal hypocrisy and political corruption is etched permanently into Indian pop culture. The performance won him his first National Film Award for Best Actor.

Prahaar: The Final Attack (1991)

The Film: A hard-hitting, uncompromising military drama exploring the psychological toll of war and societal apathy on a decorated commando.

Why It's Appreciated: Marking his directorial debut alongside playing the lead role of Major Chauhan, Patekar underwent grueling physical training with the Indian Army to ensure absolute authenticity. His portrayal of a disciplined soldier struggling to reintegrate into a corrupt civilian society is celebrated for its raw, unromanticized depiction of military trauma.

Ab Tak Chhappan (2004)

The Film: Shimit Amin's sleek, realistic police procedural chronicling the internal politics and high-stakes operations of Mumbai's notorious Encounter Squad.

Why It's Appreciated: Playing Inspector Sadhu Agashe, Patekar stripped away all cinematic heroism to portray a weary, methodical, no-nonsense cop. Relying entirely on controlled body language, cold deadpan stares, and quiet authority, he delivered a masterclass in understated intensity, making it one of the greatest cop portrayals in Indian cinema.

Agnisakshi (1996)

The Film: Partho Ghosh's psychological thriller about a woman haunted by her violently sadistic and obsessive former husband.

Why It's Appreciated: As Vishwa Nath, Patekar played a terrifying domestic abuser whose charming public facade masked a monstrous, controlling psychopath. His ability to switch instantly from gentle sophistication to chilling, cold-eyed menace made the film a deeply unsettling psychological triumph, earning him widespread critical acclaim.

Khamoshi: The Musical (1996)

The Film: Sanjay Leela Bhansali's visually lush and emotionally devastating drama about a deaf-mute couple and their musically gifted daughter.

Why It's Appreciated: Stepping away from his aggressive action persona, Patekar played Joseph, a deaf-mute father who communicates through sign language and expresses his soul entirely through music and facial expressions. His deeply tender, emotionally resonant performance proved his unmatched range as a dramatic actor capable of breaking audiences' hearts without speaking a single spoken word.

Welcome (2007)

The Film: Anees Bazmee's chaotic, slapstick multi-starrer comedy about underworld dons trying to reform their criminal lives.

Why It's Appreciated: Proving that dramatic heavyweights can master pure comedy, Patekar played Uday Shetty, a feared gangster desperately trying to find a respectable groom for his sister. Paired with Anil Kapoor, Patekar's deadpan comic timing, exasperated delivery, and iconic lines (like 'Control Uday, control') turned a mob boss into an immortal comedic icon.

Raajneeti (2010)

The Film: Prakash Jha's modern, Mahabharata-inspired political epic dissecting the ruthless mechanics of power, ambition, and electoral strategy.

Why It's Appreciated: As Brij Gopal, an aging, shrewd, and fiercely loyal political strategist modeled after Krishna, Patekar anchored the film's moral core. His deep voice, world-weary cynicism, and quiet, authoritative guidance gave the multi-starrer political thriller its gravitas.

Natsamrat (2016)

The Film: Mahesh Manjrekar's emotionally shattering Marathi drama about a legendary, aging theatrical actor who falls into tragic neglect after giving away all his wealth to his ungrateful children.

Why It's Appreciated: Playing Ganpatrao Belwalkar (Appa), Patekar delivered what many consider the crowning achievement of his cinematic career. Channeling Shakespearean tragedy into modern familial heartbreak, his thunderous monologues, raw vulnerability, and devastating descent into madness left audiences spellbound, cementing his status as an absolute titan of the performing arts.

Apaharan (2005)

The Film: Prakash Jha's intense political-thriller exploring the booming state-sanctioned kidnapping industry and ideological friction in Bihar.

Why It's Appreciated: Patekar played Tabrez Alam, a charismatic, deeply philosophical, yet ruthless politician and kidnapping kingpin. Rather than playing a standard cartoonish villain, Patekar infused the character with chilling ideological conviction and intellectual depth, turning a negative role into a fascinating study of corrupted power.

A Legacy Carved in Truth

Whether he is striking terror as an unhinged gangster, breaking hearts as a silent father, or bringing entire theater audiences to tears as a forgotten stage king, Nana Patekar's performances are defined by an absolute refusal to compromise on authenticity. He remains a rare artist who turned raw intensity into a permanent art form.
