Bollywood films which courted controversies!

As Prime Minister Narendra Modi's biopic 'PM Narendra Modi' has been banned by Election Commission, despite getting the clearance from Supreme Court of India, we take a look at some other Bollywood films of recent times which were linked to controversies. Sometimes controversies are helpful to create exhilaration among the audiences but sometimes it can go against it. Let's take a look at the list:

Bandit Queen (1994)

This internationally acclaimed biopic based on Dacoit Phoolan Devi's life was banned in India by the Censor Board because of excessive nudity. When it finally released, the film bagged 3 National Awards.

Sins (2005)

This was a film which covered the sexual escapades of Catholic priests. Shiney Ahuja played the lead role and had his first taste of controversy with this film. What happened in the later years is not so-Shiney at all.

Fanaa (2006)

Now this one's a great example of how a public figure should always tread carefully. While the film itself did not have any controversial content, political parties in Gujarat burnt effigies of Aamir Khan and unofficially banned the film after Khan expressed his concern for the Narmada Dam issue.

Black Friday (2007)

This movie is based on the Mumbai bomb-blasts of 1993. The verdict for that case was still in the court and it was said that the movie would influence the decision, which is why the movie was banned for 2 years.

Jodhaa Akbar (2008)

According to the Rajputs, Jodha was actually married to Akbar's son Salim and hence they had blocked the screening in Rajasthan.

Wake Up Sid (2009)

Even a beautiful film like Wake Up Sid could not stay out of controversy's way. The same political party banned the film because the word 'Bombay' was used instead of Mumbai!

My Name Is Khan (2010)

A prominent party (no prizes for guessing) in Maharashtra attacked cinema halls when Shahrukh Khan made a comment about Pakistani players not playing in the IPL.

Madras Cafe (2013)

This John Abraham - Nargis Fakhri starrer movie ran into controversies much before it released. Political parties from Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka sought a ban on the film because it portrayed them in poor light.

PK (2014)

We all remember the social debate which followed this movie. Some scenes of the movie hurt the sentiments of several religious groups. It showcased some of their customs as superstitions and raged people.

Padmaavat (2018)

Padmaavat is a 2018 Indian period drama film directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Loosely based on the epic poem Padmavat by Malik Muhammad Jayasi, it stars Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor, and Ranveer Singh. The film became controversial during production. Several Rajput caste organizations including Shri Rajput Karni Sena and its members had protested and later vandalized the film sets claiming that the film portrays the Padmavati, a Rajput queen, in a bad light.

PM Narendra Modi (2019)
