At a time when it seems like water scarcity will become a global reality, director Nila Madhab Panda comes out withKaun Kitne Paani Mein, a satire set in the rain shadow region of Orissa, where water becomes a currency in daily life.
Kunal Kapoor, Radhika Apte, Gulshan Grover and Saurabh Shukla essay principal roles in this film, where people from two villages are fighting over a reservoir for decades.
The dark comedy takes a turn when Kunal, a prince from the bankrupt royal family of a small village, finds himself in a twisted plan devised by his father. The actor believes, "Humour is the best way to present a serious issue because people are more receptive to it." Asserting the importance of creating increased awareness on the sensitive issue of water scarcity, he adds, "We don't really understand the magnitude of this problem that's looming ahead."
Panda, who grew up in a drought-prone area, says,"I wanted to present this issue in a light-hearted manner, without being preachy."The director is optimistic that 'the thought of facing such a problem will connect with the audience, besides conveying the message to them'. He sums it up by saying, "The attraction is in seeing a fresh film and idea, that has an element of thought."
Kaun Kitne Paani Mein, produced by One Drop Foundation in association with Eleeanora Images and Beyond Dreams Entertainment, releases tomorrow.
