In a recent interview Ghai said "In my career, I've groomed actors into stardom only for one reason - I never wanted to work with superstars. I wanted to create them because then they respect you and look up to you," said this director. Ghai feels that once actors consider themselves to be ‘super-star', they are no longer good for his relaxation, peace of mind and creative space.
Ghai also said, "‘Superstars' have these wrong notions that films run only because of them." Also, the stars are always politically correct when they say that a good script is essential, et al, but deep inside all they want are directors, who worship them and not the ones who work on their own terms and conditions."
Subhash Ghai is the man behind the making of Jackie Shroff, Mahima Choudhary, Manisha Koirala, Apoorva Agnihotri, Isha Shravani, and now the Thai actress Lina Christianson. He has also given breaks to actors like Madhuri Dixit, Shatrughan Sinha, Meenaksh Sheshadri and Sanjay Dutt during their struggling period.
There were many rumors of Ghai not having a good rapport with many of the actors he has worked with. He nullified all such rumors calling them ‘tabloid news'.
Lastly all that Ghai had to say was "A director is the chief of the unit and shouldn't be intimidated by the stars only because ‘Filmfare' has given them a few awards." - (SAMPURN)
