The film is based on the horrific events of February 27, 2002, when a mob set fire to the S6 coach of the Sabarmati Express near the Godhra railway station in Gujarat. Vikrant Massey portrays the lead role of the journalist, and his performance has received widespread acclaim.

In addition to Vikrant Massey, The Sabarmati Report stars Raashii Khanna and Ridhi Dogra. Directed by Dheeraj Sarna, the film is produced by Shobha Kapoor, Ektaa R. Kapoor, Amul V. Mohan, and Anshul Mohan under the banner of Balaji Motion Pictures, a division of Balaji Telefilms Ltd. It is presented as a Vikir Films Production and is being distributed globally by Zee Studios.
