Director Ryan Coogler took the stage alongside Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, Letitia Wright (Shuri), and Winston Duke (M’Baku) to unveil the next chapter for Wakanda and introduce the franchise's new leading man.
David Jonsson Cast as the New Black Panther
British actor David Jonsson (Alien: Romulus, The Long Walk) has officially been cast to portray the adult version of Prince T’Challa II (also known as Toussaint).
Passing the Mantle: First introduced as a child in the mid-credits scene of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022) as the secret son of the late King T’Challa and Nakia (Lupita Nyong'o), the third installment will feature a coming-of-age story following an in-universe time jump.
Preserving Chadwick Boseman’s Legacy: Rather than recasting the original role of T'Challa following Chadwick Boseman’s passing in 2020, Marvel is carrying the legacy forward organically through his son.
Jonsson’s Reaction: Taking the stage in Hall H, Jonsson expressed his gratitude: "Thank you to this amazing family that I have the honor, the privilege, and the blessing to join. Believe me, the honor is entirely mine."
Key Details & Denzel Washington Confirmation
Denzel Washington Joins: Coogler confirmed that legendary Oscar-winning actor Denzel Washington will appear in the film. Coogler revealed he had personally written a specific role for Washington, who previously hinted at his involvement in the franchise.
Returning Favorites: Letitia Wright will reprise her role as Shuri alongside Winston Duke as King M'Baku, ensuring continuity across Wakanda’s leadership.
Large-Format Cinematic Scale: Marvel confirmed that Black Panther 3 will be shot using 70mm large-format cameras.
Trade Verdict:
Positioning Black Panther 3 as a December 2028 holiday tentpole gives Marvel Studios a powerful anchor following the culmination of the Multiverse Saga. By focusing on Prince T'Challa II’s ascension under Ryan Coogler's direction, the franchise honors Chadwick Boseman's foundational impact while setting up a compelling new era for Wakanda.
