The untitled production unites Sunny Kaushal, Vishal Jethwa, and marks the full-length acting return of Bipasha Basu after a multi-year hiatus. Backed by Prabhleen Sandhu under the banner of Almighty Motion Pictures, the series went on floors earlier this week in Mumbai.
The Premise: An Incorruptible Officer in an Emerging Narcotics Hub
While Prime Video has kept the official series title under wraps in its launch announcement, details regarding the narrative world highlight Mehta's trademark focus on systemic corruption:
The Setting: Set against the backdrop of a small, volatile town on the brink of becoming the continent’s primary heroin and opium corridor.
The Protagonist: Sunny Kaushal takes center stage as an unyielding police officer caught in a vice grip between political superiors, corrupt departmental machinery, and ruthless drug syndicates.
The Barabanki Connection: Industry reports indicate that the narrative takes strong narrative inspiration from retired Director General of Police Aloke Lal’s acclaimed book, The Barabanki Narcos: Busting India’s Most Notorious Drug Cartel, detailing the massive 1984 police operations that took down an entrenched narcotics cartel in Uttar Pradesh.
Bipasha Basu's Return to the Screen: "Eager to Explore Long Arcs"
The project represents a headline casting coup by bringing Bipasha Basu back into active production.
The Sabbatical Ends: Basu, whose last acting appearance was in the 2020 digital thriller Dangerous, stepped away from the camera following the birth of her daughter, Devi, in late 2022.
The Decision to Return: Speaking on her comeback, Basu shared:
“I am an actor, and I’m extremely eager to act now. I was not ready for some time because I wanted to give my hundred per cent to my child. Now that Devi has started school, I finally have some time where I can step out and do the job that I love. I want to explore shows where you can have a long character arc that you rarely get in feature films.”
Her Character: Basu plays a central, emotionally complex character sharing a pivotal personal connection with the central investigation.
OTT & Trade Take:
Hansal Mehta has firmly established himself as Indian streaming's foremost chronicler of institutional real-world crime. Pairing Sunny Kaushal’s grounded dramatic range with the explosive screen presence of Vishal Jethwa—anchored by Bipasha Basu in a mature, substantive streaming role—signals that Prime Video is looking to build another prestige, true-crime procedural franchise in the vein of Pataal Lok and Scoop.
