Vidya Balan Opens Up on Overcoming Early 'Jinx' Tag in South Cinema as She Returns Opposite Rajinikanth in 'Jailer 2'!
Decades after being branded a "jinx" by regional filmmakers following multiple shelved projects early in her career, National Award-winning actress Vidya Balan has come full circle. Ahead of the worldwide theatrical arrival of director Nelson Dilipkumar’s Jailer 2 opposite Superstar Rajinikanth, Balan reflected on how those early rejections shaped her career trajectory and shared candid anecdotes from shooting with the veteran icon.

Speaking in an interview with Screen, the Tamilian actress admitted that the trauma of losing back-to-back South Indian projects had once closed her off mentally to working in any language other than Hindi.

"I Wasn’t Mentally Open to Any Language but Hindi": Breaking the Stigma

Before breaking through in Hindi cinema with Parineeta (2005), Balan's initial attempts to enter cinema in the early 2000s were met with widespread rejection in Malayalam and Tamil industries:

The Shelved Debut: Her planned cinematic debut was the Malayalam feature Chakram opposite Mohanlal. When the production was abruptly halted and shelved midway through its first schedule, regional producers superstitiously blamed Balan for bringing "bad luck".

The Domino Effect: She was summarily replaced in over half a dozen signed Tamil and Malayalam projects without being given an audition or trial.

The Perspective Shift: Recalling that phase, Balan explained: “My dream is to do films in all the Indian languages over time. But definitely because I'm a Tamilian, I'm excited about Jailer 2. I'm also ready for this. I had a lot of misses in both Malayalam and Tamil films at the beginning of my career. I was replaced even before the shooting because of that whole 'jinx' thing.

So, for a while, I wasn't mentally open to doing films in any language, but Hindi. But over time, I've matured and realised that was just the time. It doesn't have to do with anything else. And as an actor, we're hungry to do good roles.”

The Nicotine Tremor: Blowing Smoke in Rajinikanth’s Face

Sharing a memorable moment from filming Jailer 2, Balan revealed that she found herself physically trembling during an intense, stylized face-off sequence with Rajinikanth:

The Scene: The sequence required her character to light a cigarette and exhale smoke directly toward Rajinikanth’s face.

The Physical Reaction: “I don't know if it was inhibition. But it was my body having a reaction because the nicotine hit me. Then I began to get stressed because I had to steady my hand. So, I had a physical reaction. Of course, I was conscious that I was blowing smoke in his face, but I'm not shy about smoking on screen. It was just that my body wasn't used to it.”

Trade Take:

Vidya Balan stepping into the mega-canvas world of Jailer 2 is poetic redemption. After regional industry gatekeepers once labeled her a liability early in her journey, she returns to Tamil cinema opposite its biggest cultural icon, surrounded by pan-Indian stalwarts like Mohanlal and Mithun Chakraborty—proving that longevity and undeniable craft outlast superstition.
