It has now been imported by 'Show Time', a pay cable channel. The series based on a book with a similar title, has taken shape out of an anonymous blog written by a lady who called herself Belle de Jour.
The series is a cross between a fake documentary and a light hearted comedy and tracks the life of Belle de Jour played by Billie Piper. Belle tries to navigate the line between her personal life and professional persona.
The series is probably less sexually explicit than most R rated films and some cable series such as HBO's 'Tell me you love me', but is more criticized because it has tried to glamorize a profession that victimizes a woman who works in it.
It is fantasy of male chauvinists that a call girl enjoys sex apart from earning her livelihood from her profession and this series supports this conception.
Chris Albrecht, president of IMG Global Media, who produced this series in Britain, does not agree with it.
Piper argues that as simple escapist entertainment, the series should be able to focus on prostitution without being accused of glamorizing inhumanity Freelance journalist Pradeep Gupta, who is on a visit to USA now, feels that the series wants to do for prostitution what HBO's 'Big Love' series has done for polygamy - presenting a sanitized version of controversial sexual behavior.
