"Only the backdrop is similar, " insists Anurag. "Dev D is a contemporary musical love story. It is unconventional but not dark unlike my previous films. T
he idea is to tell a modern day story and Devdas gave it a parallel. Both the films are similar in their storylines but the way they are shown, is different. It is more of a reflection of the times we live in. The music is unlike any musical Bollywood has seen.
Moreover, this film is highly contemporised; it is all about facts and real life stories. Major headlines stories have been woven in th
e script, like the Sanjeev Nanda BMW case, DPS MMS case, then the Reagent Hotel scandal in Delhi, " he says.
Pointing at the differences, Anurag clarifes, "Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Devdas was a period film. Here Devdas is a drug addict NRI, while Paro is a rusty Punjabi girl and Chandramukhi is a Delhite who gets involved in the flesh trade.
The audience should enjoy this one as it is modern and more realistic take on the same subject. We mainly shot in Delhi's Pahaarganj. It remains crowded most of the time, shooting in day time is almost impossible.
We used to shoot with hidden cameras. At night also we faced difficulties, as we required lights. Mainly we would shoot around four in morning. The film has been partly shot in London, Canada, Basipathani village and Punjab as well."
Anurag is not perturbed about the fact that his previous two films did not exactly hitting the bull's eye. "Black Friday was well appreciated but it was badly hit by piracy.
As far as No Smoking was concerned, forget about liking it, neither the critics nor the masses could understand it. So it went completely wrong. Now with Dev D, I have high expectations and hopefully it will be liked by all, " he concludes.
