The Guru

The Guru is dubbed from a Hollywood film of the same name. It is a sex comedy about an Indian immigrant in the US, with stars in his eyes. He ends up becoming a sex guru.Simpleton. Ramu Gupta arrives in Hollywood to pursue his dream of becoming a movie star. Ground realities, however, force him to take up a job at a restaurant. One day, he bags the lead role in a film. However, when the shooting begins, he realises that he has been hired to act in a pornographic film! Naive Ramu is too shocked to `perform`. His heroine Sharonna (Heather Graham) is sympathetic towards him and says a few kind words to help him overcome his inhibitions. Ramu, however, still can`t get himself to do what is required and is kicked out of the film. At the same time, he develops feelings for Sharonna who is already engaged to be married to another guy.

Ramu is one day forced to substitute as a spiritual guru in order to help his friend. When faced with an eager audience waiting for words of wisdom from him, Ramu is at his wit`s end as to what to say. He suddenly remembers the kind words that Sharonna had said to him on the film set and repeats them in front of the audience. His words, a mix of spiritualism and sex, have an astounding effect on the audience and soon, Ramu is hailed as The Sex Guru by one and all.

As his popularity spreads, Ramu now a.k.a. The Guru is forced to approach Sharonna and learn how to get rid of one`s inhibitions when it comes to sex. He passes on this newly-acquired knowledge to his `disciples` who revere him even more now. Things go hunky-dory for Ramu for a while, until, one day, Sharonna - who has, by now, fallen in love with him - happens to see him giving one of his sex discourses. She is shocked to find that Ramu is only repeating to his disciples what she had told him. She confronts Ramu and the two have a spat. Ramu cannot bear to continue the charade of being The Guru any more. During a television show, he confesses of not really being a guru. In the climax, Ramu rushes to the church where Sharonna is getting married and proclaims his love for her. At the same time, another man confesses of having feelings for Sharonna`s groom! Ultimately, Ramu and Sharonna unite.

Besides the double-meaning dialogues, the front-benchers will also like a couple of steamy sex-scenes. On the minus side, the film looks disjointed and a mere assemblage of sex-laden scenes. What also goes against the film is the unfamiliarity of Hindi film audiences with the American way of life. Jimi Mistry does an able job as the sex guru. Heather Graham exudes sex appeal. Marisa Tomei, too, exposes wantonly, but to much lesser effect. Emil Marwa and others in the cast lend good support. Director Daisy Von Scherler Meyer succeeds in keeping the narration simple and convincing. The borrowed music is good. Dubbing is very good. Other technical aspects are proper. On the whole, The Guru has appeal for front-benchers and masses, thanks to double-entendres. But its non-appeal for the family audiences will limit its prospects.
