Mumbai Se Aaya Mera Dost can be make or break film for Abhishek Bachchan, who is desperately seeking a hit. Produced by Vishal Nihalani and directed by Apoorva Lakhia it is a story of a remote village in Rajasthan that still doesn't have any electricity. Abhishek is playing the protagonist and starring opposite him is former beauty queen Lara Dutta. The music of the film has been composed by Mr. Original, Anu Malik. The album hits off with "Shaher Ka Jadoo Re" sung by Alka Yagnik and Sonu Nigam with a very brief violin intro. The track has a mid-nineties feeling to it.
The same singer duo sing a soft romantic number - "Mujhe Tune Jo Dekha To" which is good but not instantly catchy. It has a Rajasthani touch to it contrasted with Bollywood melody. Unfortunately, mediocre lyrics by Sameer completely ruin any hard work that Anu did. Words like "main teri deewani bani kab se... ohh kya keh diya" are boring and predictable.
Next on the list is "Saiyan" sung by Sunidhi Chauhan. It is a dance track and lively enough to listen to but somehow it never manages to lift itself above the ordinary. Sunidhi changes her pitch from being shrill to outright husky and manages to raise oomph !! "Koi Bheega Hai Rang Se", is a Holi number sung by the Sonu Nigam and Alka Yagnik. Sonu ´s rendition is commendable. He sings with a real raging passion in his voice. Alka gives adequate support. The tempo of the song seems uneven because of the mixture of slow and fast parts.
"Jeetenge Baazi Hum" by Sonu Nigam and Mahalaxmi has the musical arrangements by Ranjit Barot. Apart from the beat, the rest of the tune has nothing to offer. Sonu and Mahalaxmi do their best to infuse energy but to little avail. Ranjit´s music arrangement is just a way of covering up what is essentially a poor track. Amar Mohile´s instrumental piece "The Journey" is nicely composed. Hopefully, this instrumental will be used effectively in the film. Overall, "Mumbai Se Aaya Mera Dost" is an average affair but it can pick up if the film manages to do well.
