She is the voice behind popular tracks such as 'Marjaani' (Billu), 'Mohabbat Aapse' (Aa Dekhen Zara), 'Thaa Kar Ke' (Golmaal Returns) and 'Move Your Body' (Kismat Konnection) amongst a couple of dozen other songs that have made their presence felt in last half a decade. Now Akriti Kakar, all of 23 years of age, has embarked on a new journey by coming up with her debut solo non-film album 'Akriti'.

However, there is a little history behind her debut album 'Akriti'. Apparently, before doing this album she had signed up with another music company but eventually the deal fell through.

"Yes, I was signed up with another but then their idea was to do an album which was very commercial. Not just the audio quality was bad, even the video was supposed to be one of those cheesy ones. Moreover, I wasn't a part of the creative process. Naturally I backed out since this isn't something that I wanted to do. I wasn't game for a frivolous melody where there could be the likes of say, a Mallika Sherawat, dancing on screen. I wanted to do something far classier and pronto took a NOC from the company", says Akriti for whom the better choice was to walk out.

What followed was a low period for Akriti where even though she was doing good in the world of playback singing, she still carried a regret of not being able to do what she really wanted.

"I thought that I won't be able to do something of my own choice at all. After all not everybody gets a Sanjay Leela Bhansali to launch them at the very beginning of your career so I had to take all the baby steps myself to reach a position from where I would be getting good respect. I like to do songs like 'Bol Na Halke Halke (Jhoom Barabar Jhoom), 'Chup Chup Ke (Bunty Aur Babli), 'Aaj Din Chadhya' (Love Aaj Kal) and those singers are really fortunate who get an opportunity like this. After all these are the kind of songs that motivate you as a singer", says Akriti who comes with a strong classical background.

Result was the album titled 'Akriti' which promises to bring to fore an entirely different set of genres that range from up-tempo dance numbers to meaningful ballads, soulful romantic songs to rustic songs set to ethnic tunes.
