DELIVER OR DISAPPEAR. That seems to Dholakia's brief.
In what seems to be a revolutionary step towards getting the song right Rahul Dholakia has sent out feelers to several composers in the film industry asking for a song that would be shot on the entire cast of the film. Dholakia won't accept a compromised composition.
All the composers have been asked to submit their creation. Rahul will choose the right tune and ask the other composers to return with their rejected content.
The method of song selection has created a furore in the music industry. Says one of the hottest composers, "How can he ask composers to make a tune like submitting tenders for a business deal? Composing a song is not like buying and selling cement. It's a creative job. It's very demoralizing to tell composers to f. . k off. "
But Dholakia is sure of what he is doing. "In the past composers were asked to create 4-5 tunes for every lyric and then the filmmaker would select the one he liked. Nowadays we accept whatever is given to us. I think it's wrong. "
In fact Jatin Pundit has composed one song for Society. But Dholakia didn't like what Jatin has come up with for the ensemble cast.
Says the director, "I've postponed the dates of my actors. I 'll get the whole cast together later when I get the song, although co-ordinating everyone's dates would be tough. But I won't shoot the song until I'm sure it is right. I've till September. Everything else is ready in the film. "
When asked to name the composers who have been given the task of composing the ensemble song Dholakia demurs, "How can I name them? Those that would get rejected would feel bad. All I can say is I've asked all the non-A-lister composers to get me an ensemble song. That means, no Pritam. "
