January 26 is a red-letter day for Sanjay Gupta, who launches his new directorial venture, Khottey Sikkey. The film will be an action thriller and a sequel to his 2002 hit, Kaante. A graphic novel is set to be released along with the film.
Gupta is planning a series of films accompanied by graphic novels as part of his company White Feather's franchise.
Gupta explains, "A graphic novel will be released with the film. The graphic novel was an idea that my creative partner Samir Hafiz came up with. He co-authored the screenplay with Sanjay Bhatia. He's been working on it since he has a background in graphic literature and animated gaming."
Gupta has also trademarked the name of his film and production house.
"I am very liberal about my titles. When Ratan Jain, who wanted me to part with Khottey Sikkey, asked me to give them the title, Tezz, for their new Priyadarshan-thriller, I agreed. But Khottey Sikkey, I cannot give away."
"Now, no one can put out a spaghetti dish called Khottey Sikkey or a condom named White Feather," Gupta says.
Though he is unwilling to reveal the cast, Gupta says, "Most of the Kaante crew, including cinematographer Spiro Rozatos, is back on board."
As for the cast, one actor from Kaante won't be seen in the sequel -- Sanjay Dutt.
Khottey Sikkey has been allegedly appropriated by Yashraj Films for a television serial. There is pressure on Gupta from film guilds, as well as people close to Yashraj, to let go of the title.
"How can I do that? I told the Yashraj representative to let me have their title, Dhoom. They can then have Khottey Sikkey," says Gupta.
