It is always difficult for a new film to come right after a successful one; this is exactly the case with Shanghai. Rowdy Rathore in its second week has entered the coveted group of the Rs 100 crore box office club by collecting Rs 101.42 crore in India.
In fact it is the first film of UTV and Sanjay Leela Bhansali to reach the 100 crore mark. The film has collected $2, 676, 432 from the overseas market at the end of the ninth day.
Despite excellent reviews, Shanghai is yet to connect with the audience. Though it opened at a minimal pace by collecting Rs 3 crore on the opening day, the film has collected Rs 9 crore over Saturday and Sunday making the weekend collection of Rs 12 crore.
Distributor Rajesh Thadani from Mumbai says, "Shanghai has collected Rs 12 crore on the weekend. It had a good start but it was below our expectations. Given the reviews and star value of the actors, we expected it to reach at least Rs 20 crore as the film has released in 1, 200 screens."
A distributor from Kolkata claims, "From the 65 centres that the film is being screened, over the weekend the film has collected Rs 70 lakh which is a good number for Bengal territory. But only the Monday figures will be able to tell if the film will earn money for its distributors or not."
Shanghai is going strong at the multiplexes and Rowdy Rathore has a strong hold at the single screens.
In fact because of Rowdy, Shanghai has not even got enough single screens. Among the Hollywood releases Prometheus and Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted, the latter is doing better as compared to Prometheus.
