The Madras High Court on Wednesday asked the filmmakers to not release their venture without getting permission from the Film Certification Board.
This followed the Film Certification Board's statement to the Madras High Court that it is yet to issue clearance to the Tamil version.
A petition has been also filed in the court asking for delay in release as the film can create a law and order problem if released in Tamil Nadu.
According to reports, Pro-Tamil groups who have watched a preview of the Hindi version alleged that 'Madras Cafe' portrays the LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) as a terror group.
'Madras Cafe' deals with relations between India and Sri Lanka in the late eighties and early nineties.
Directed by Shoojit Sircar, the film stars John Abraham playing a RAW agent.
Actress Nargis Fakhri plays the role of a journalist in the film.
