Melody Queen Lata Mangeshkar has been conferred the ''Legend Honour'' for this year by the jury of the second Sahara Sangeet Awards.

The award was announced by actress-politician Jaya Bachchan at a function attended by the nominees and stalwarts of the music and film industry.The presentation ceremony will be held on September 24 at San Francisco in USA.

Adorned with gold and precious stones, the Sangeet awards trophy, specially crafted by D'Damas, was revealed amidst great fanfare and was presented to the living legend, who lamented her inability to attend the awards function.

Lata, having been named for the award received the Legend Honour, said she was truely humbled to see the music and film fraternity come together as one to pay her the prestigious tribute.

Jaya said, ''Lataji needs no awards and felicitation. In fact, the stature of Sangeet awards has risen with the organisers decision to felicitate her.'' Speaking on the occasion, Sanjay Lal, MD and CEO of Percept D Mark (PDM) International, one of the organisers, said Lata Mangeshkar's hegemony in the world of playback singing is undisputed.

''She has lent her voice to heroines across three generations ...

from Madhubala to Sridevi to Preity Zinta. She is indeed a true living legend and undeniably the supreme voice of the Indian film music. We are deeply honoured to have her with us today to accept the Legend Honour at this year's Sahara One Sangeet Awards.'' Speaking on behalf of the jury, film-maker Ramesh Sippy said ''Lataji is the ideal exponent of everything to do with film music.

Her talent transcends time. She can convey every emotion through her voice. There cannot be anything greater than her and her contribution to Indian musical heritage.'' The awards function to be held at Oakland Arena in San Francisco will witness over 120 members from the film and music fraternity, who will come together to celebrate the richness of the Indian film and non-film music on a global platform.

The function will be telecast on Sahara One television, which is a partner in this initiative for the second time.

Shah Rukh Khan along with host of other celebrities will perform live at the event,organisers said.
