An annual celebration, the EDIDA has now morphed into a mammoth event and is today, a recognised platform for evaluating product design, within the industry. Instituted in November 2002 throughout all the 20 countries in which the magazine ELLE DECOR has a presence, the aim is to identify and honour indigenous talent in home decor products at the national level, and to provide an international stage for this creativity.
The EDIDA finalists from each country automatically qualify for the final worldwide contest. The global winners will be announced at the Salon Mobile, Milan in April 2006.
Ten EDIDAs were presented for the best decor product design across the categories of lighting, fabric, bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, furniture, flooring, wall covering, table top and designer of the year. Projecting the Autumn/Winter 2005 look, that is all set to be in vogue this year, icy blue, steel, transparent and metallic was the theme for the EDIDA evening. Indirect lighting of the tables gave a surreal glow while some tables had metal buckets with an ice globe embellished with a tinsel tree. The dry ice in the bucket created a swirl of smoke, adding to the drama. Unconventional chandeliers are the current rage, and the stunning Swarovski chandelier at the venue was the piece de resistance throwing its radiance on the podium.
Blue and white cocktails, iced hors d'oeuvres, a fusion of French, Italian and South East Asian cuisines completed the look for the evening.
