At an event that awarded the worst of Bollywood, Abhishek said,"It's a reminder that people are hopeless and depressed enough in their lives that their solution to every problem is 'let's go watch a movie'. Bollywood is basically the antithesis of the evening news Petrol's gone up, stocks gone low, Modi buys a new suit, let's all go watch a movie'. Bollywood is not making movies anymore, they're just making projects."
We later asked him what led to this decision, and he explained,"It is just that we have seen this year that nothing has worked for many months now. So, somewhere, I think it's time to introspect. The fact that Hollywood films are making more money here than Bollywood films is something to think about. I am just retiring from the concept of Bollywood. I am not saying I won't make movies, but I think I should do that beyond the restrictions of what 'Bollywood' is. It's not where you work, it's what you do that should matter."
At the event, Abhishek got the Bawra Ho Gaya Hai Ke award for 'The Shaukeens'. It was presented by his previous film 'Tere Bin Laden' actor Pradhuman Singh, who joked, "Aap toh mere guru thay, aapko kya ho gaya"
