The fire, which was reportedly caused by a short-circuit in the AC in Sen's bedroom, broke out around 1.45am in the two sixth-floor apartments in Ruia Park Cooperative Housing Society. Sen was at home with her husband, actor daughter Riya Sen, a maid and two dogs at the time of the incident. On noticing the flames, they ran out to safety. Even the neighbours were alerted as the flames spread to the lift.
Fire officials rushed to the spot with four engines and four tankers after they got a call. Ri ya told TOI that the firemen took 45 minutes to douse the flames and they were "good".
Chief fire officer Sunil Nesrikar said around three rooms were gutted. "It was a major fire.We were informed that it started from the AC in Sen's bedroom. The fire was doused within 25 minutes, but the cooling operations took time," he said.
A fire official said, "The flats and the common passage on the floor were engulfed in flames. The doors, windows and most furniture were charred, but no one was hurt."
The Sens moved out on Sunday, but guards were stationed on the floor as the doors were damaged. "I rushed out of my house as the fire spread on the floor. The lift outside Sen's flat is damaged. My door too got burnt," said a neighbour, who was moving out for the day as the lift was not operational.
