"We Are on It": Zoya Akhtar Confirms 'Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara 2' Script Development as Cult Classic Clocks 15 Years!
Filmmaker Zoya Akhtar has officially confirmed that active script development is underway for a sequel to her 2011 cult classic Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (ZNMD). Speaking at the Monsoon Film Festival during a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter India, Akhtar shared that she and longtime co-writer Reema Kagti are exploring how to bring Arjun (Hrithik Roshan), Kabir (Abhay Deol), and Imran (Farhan Akhtar) back together in a narrative that organically fits their lives today.

"We Are on It": Zoya on Finding the Right Story
Addressing the persistent demand from audiences as the original film celebrates its 15th anniversary, Akhtar confirmed that the creative team is working on cracking the next chapter:

"We are on it. We don't know what will happen and what won't... if we will get to a place it feels correct, in catching up with these characters today. But it will be nice."

The Commercial That Triggered Fan Hysteria

Akhtar also touched upon the viral frenzy stirred in 2025 when Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar, and Abhay Deol reunited on-screen for a tourism ad campaign, which fans initially mistook for an unannounced movie trailer:

The Fan Backlash: "People thought it was a trailer. First, they were like 'YEAH!' but then I got abused in my DMs saying, 'This was not funny,'" Akhtar recalled with a laugh, highlighting how strongly audiences remain attached to the trio's friendship dynamic.

Revisiting the Trio in Their 40s: Early script drafts aim to look at the three friends at a distinctly different stage of life—exploring career shifts, evolving relationships, and modern mid-life challenges while retaining the road-trip ethos and emotional honesty of the original.

Addressing the "Posh-People Angst" Tag

When asked about long-standing critique that her films often center on affluent, upper-class existential conflicts, Akhtar remained unfazed:

Creative Conviction: "It still comes up, but it does not bother me now. These are stories and as a filmmaker I got to tell stories of all kinds of people... If it's not something that resonates with you, I totally respect that. But I am interested, and so I'll make them," she noted.

Trade Verdict:

Earning over ₹153 crore worldwide upon its release in 2011 and shaping the pop-culture travel bucket lists of an entire generation, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara remains one of Excel Entertainment’s crowning achievements. While production timelines will depend on locking the final draft and coordinating the schedules of its leading stars, confirmation that Zoya Akhtar and Reema Kagti are actively penning the sequel sets up ZNMD 2 as one of Hindi cinema's most anticipated future projects.
