Based on the Battle of Saragarhi, this movie shall face a lot of competition because at least 2 movies on this greatest battle are already in the making and would have released by that time. Filmmakers have the fetish for making movies which are contextual. And the Battle of Saragarhi is the flavour of the season. The reason - it's been 120 years to the battle and the anniversary fell on September 12. The Chief Minister of Punjab even released his book in September on this Battle at London.
The Battle of Saragarhi has fought in the rugged mountains of North-West Frontier Province 120 years ago, but it still continues to inspire countless soldiers across the world. It's an epic event of the bravery of 21 soldiers of 36th Sikhs (now the 4th Battalion of the Sikh Regiment) pitted against 10,000 Pashtun Orakzai tribals in September 1897. The Sikhs, led by Havildar Ishar Singh, chose to fight to the death, in what is considered by some military historians as one of the history's greatest last-stands.
Akshay loves to don a turban and has played the role of a Sikh in a number of movies. And almost all of his movies where he plays a Sikh gentleman have been super duper hits. And in all probability, Akshay Kumar would play the role of Havildar Ishar Singh in this just announced movie.
The other movie based on this battle is Battle of Saragarhi, directed by Rajkumar Santoshi and stars Randeep Hooda and Vikramjeet Virk. This movie is set to release soon.
Even Ajay Devgn announced a movie on this monumental event in 2016. Named Sons of Sardaar' (SOS), he even released a poster of the same. This was to be plus 100 crore budget movie with Hollywood grandeur. However, not much has been heard of this venture since then.
However, the most surprising aspect of this announcement is that Dharma Productions and Akshay Kumar's Cape of Good Films are jointly producing this movie. Earlier it was announced as a joint project between Salman Khan Films and Karan Johar's Dharma Productions. Akshay Kumar was supposed to play the lead even in that joint production. However, it was reported that since Ajay Devgn is already making a film on the same subject, he asked Salman not to make another film.
So Salman's loss is surely Akshay's gain. Let's hope this gain does not put any relationships at unnecessary stake!
