Kosa hai kosa hai barish ka bosa hai...Who but the inimitable Gulzar to lend a new relevance to the rain song for Mani Rathnam's new eagerly-waited flick.
From Bole re papihara in Guddi to Megha re megha in Pyasa Sawan to Pani re pan in Shor i...the frolic-in-the-rain formula has always been favoured.
Shreya Ghosal's prowess as a vocalist has gone from subtle to supple. Her vocals hover over Barso re like cuddly clouds.
Infectiously rendered Barso re meshes into the next track Tere bina which has a superb leading refrain by Rahman.
Maryem Toller's Mayya is an exquisitely laid out item song. Chinmayee's additional vocals in Tere bina and Mayya add value for the moaning.
The rest of the album from Bappi Lahiri's strictly situational Ek lo ek muft to Hariharan-Alka Yagnik's Aye hairathe are consumed by a coldness that grips the heart of the tunes.
At its best, namely Barso re and parts of Tere bina, this soundtrack is worthy of Rahman's roomy stature. The rest of the album just about gets by.
