Irrfan Khan, who played the role of Saajan Fernandes in the film, liked the film script and loved the concept of his character who does not speak much but talks through notes. After seeing Batra's short film and a couple of meetings Irrfan agreed to act in the film. Apart from Irfan, the film also includes the star cast of Nimrat Kaur and Nawazuddin Siddiqui.
While remembering the film, on its seventh anniversary of release date, Nimrat Kaur remembers late Irfan Khan and wrote, `Today, 7 years ago in India, overnight from 'that Cadbury girl', my identity became that girl in that Irrfan movie..one of life's greatest honours as his ardent fan, admirer and an actor. Forever blessed to have shared this gift of a journey... #7YearsOfTheLunchbox #IrrfanForever.` Check out her tweet here -

In 2014, 'The lunchbox', became the third highest-grossing foreign film behind 'Cantinflas' and 'P.K' in the United States. The film received widespread critical acclaim from both critics and audiences alike. On September 17th, 2013 even after such success and accolades on the international level, the selection committee of the Film Federation of India (FFI) decided to send the Gujarati film, 'The Good Road' in the 86th Academy Awards for the Best Foreign Film Category, instead of 'The Lunchbox'.
Well, it has been seven years now, but still 'The Lunchbox' has its own identity. This epistolary romance film written and directed by Ritesh Batra, and produced by Guneet Monga, Anurag Kashyap, and Arun Rangachari. The film was jointly produced by various studios including DAR motion pictures, UTV Motion Pictures, Dharma Productions, Sikhya Entertainment, NFDC (India), ROH Films (Germany), ASAP Films (France), and the Cine Mosaic (United States). All in all, the film will always stay in our hearts and memories, especially the late Irrfan Khan!
