Just Be Free is a collection of stuff that she recorded when she was 13 or so, making this a collector`s item should she kick the bucket anytime soon. Semantics aside, sit on your rear and lend me your ears!
Just Be Free , starts off with the title track. A reckless techno track, you first notice that Christina`s vocals are just not as tight as they should be. Basically, it`s a party number but you get that "Something`s missing" feel in the song. Then comes By Your Side, a song that doesn`t really cut it vocally and it is just too long and another problem is that it has the beats of an old Milli Vanilli record. Move it comes next in a dance remix version. If you don`t throw a punch at your CD player now, you are probably .... This is basically the problem with the album, it can really irritate you at points. Our Day Will Come heralds more contemporary beats and a bit of R`n B but Christina really sounds like a child on this track. Again, nothing worth hearing. Next number Believe Me. This is a sentimental track where Aguilera really taxes her vocals and comes out just superbly. I have always been fascinated by this girl`s vocals and now I know why she`s way ahead of Britney and the Bimbo bunch.
From here however, it`s downhill. Make me Happy has as much significance on the album as a cigarette in a burning building. Don`t even Bother! Dream a Dream is next and it has a good intro. Christina however sings like she swallowed a banana whole and destroys the entire song with her "pseudo-scatting." You`re then taken to Move It without the dance mix. It is much better and Christina sounds sexy! The Way You Talk To Me follows with Christina sounding like she just woke up! Running Out of Time suddenly jerks you out of a stupor. This is a pumping track but Christina goes off pitch on purpose. What the purpose was, only the people in the studio, on that fateful day know. Believe Me is back in a Dance mix and its effect is not diluted. Finally a Spanish version of Just Be Free ends the album on a sour note.
This a collector`s item. An album where the artist has sold the music not like it should be, where the music sells the artist. An average buy, it would best be for Aguilera fans and music while driving to the disco, not at the party itself.
