Noted Bollywood lyricist and filmmaker Gulzar is penning the script for a sound and light show at the famed 16th century Amber Fort here for which superstar Amitabh Bachchan will lend his baritone to inform tourists about the history of Jaipur and its monuments.

The poet, who came to Jaipur during Diwali, spent two days at the fort visualizing the script for the show, which is slated to begin in January.

"Gulzar spent hours at Amber Fort while conceptualising the script," a tourism department official told.

The lyricist, who had come along with some of his team members, was assisted by historians from Rajasthan.

The purpose of the light and sound show is to educate tourists about the history of Jaipur, its rulers, historical monuments, the historical background of the fort and ancient anecdotes associated with it, officials said.

The one-hour show, which will be in Hindi and English initially, is estimated to cost Rs. 300 million. The tourism department is planning to have the show in some foreign languages too, an official said.

"The voiceover for the light and sound show is to be done by Amitabh Bachchan," a source in the tourism department said.

A Delhi-based company, under the supervision of the tourism department, will run the show.

A part of the fort would be illuminated by laser lights and a detailed description of that portion would follow along with historical tales associated with it, sources added.

Located at a distance of 11 km from Jaipur, the Amber Fort situated on a hilltop in Rajasthan is a popular tourist attraction. The fort was constructed in 1592 and modified over a period of 150 years by successive rulers.

A light and sound show launched recently at the majestic Chittorgarh Fort, for which Bollywood actors Hema Malini and Shah Rukh Khan have provided the voice, has become a great attraction for tourists to that city, over 290 km from here.

Lata Mangeshkar and Rehmat Khan are among other artistes to have lent their voices for the Chittorgarh Fort show, which is witnessed by around 1,000 visitors daily.

Established at a cost of around Rs. 29 million, the project is the first of its kind in the state that has been set up on a public-private partnership (PPP) basis.

Financed by the union Ministry of Tourism and executed by the Indian Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC), the event is being managed by the Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation (RTDC) and Hindustan Zinc Limited on a partnership basis.
