Styles, as connoisseurs suggested at the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week (WIFW) that concluded Sunday evening, may be about trends and cycles - what with the return of the stylised dhotis of the 80s, pleated pants, frocks and resort wear of the 60s and 70s on the ramp. But the dream merchants of showbiz have their ears to the ground when it comes to personal fashion statements.

Comfort and longevity are the bottom lines for the stars this season. Supermodel-turned-actor-turned grassroots textile activist Milind Soman refused to step out of his T-shirt and denims. The lithe actor, who is sporting a salt and pepper beard and a shorter hairdo this season, laughed off the bling. And, said yes to workday chic.

"Style is continuous but fashion is seasonal. I have seen a lot of western silhouettes and contemporary cuts here this time, but I make my own statement - denims and T-shirts, " the actor, clad in a dull green T-shirt and acid-washed denims frayed at the edges, told here. He teamed it up with dark glasses for a rather enigmatic look.

When not attired in workday clothes and Indian-style formals, Milind's favourite designers are a brand from Japan and a southeast Asia one that break from conventions to create compact, futuristic and "different kind" of clothes.

"I dig clothes from the fashion house, Comme Des Garcons, founded by Tokyo-born Rei Kawakubo and Shanghai Tang, owned by the Hong Kong-based businessman David Tang Wing Cheung, " Milind said.

The supermodel fancies Rajesh Pratap Singh's designs back home.

Actor Sanjay Suri, who is starring in Onir's new romantic film "Sorry Bhai" and Nandita Das's directorial debut "Firaaq", says metrosexual styles for men will co-exist with classic retro clothes cut in straight lines.

"My idea of a formal evening or party wear is a three-piece suit with a waistcoat provided one has a slim waist to hold all that clothing. I love waist coats, it lifts the torso, " said the actor, clad in trademark Bollywood black.

The same attire can be tweaked with a T-shirt instead of the waistcoat, dress shirt and formal shoes, Sanjay added.

"Personally, I like clothes that are identifiable, live long in terms of style and years. I am not dictated by mindless consumerism, " the actor said.

Mix and match is Sanjay's motto. His evening colours are white, red and black; while during the day, he prefers to stick to white and blue. Sanjay is comfortable in Rohit Bal, Ravi Bajaj and Ashish Soni creations. "But given a chance, I'd vote for a Georgio Armani any day, " he said.

Actor Boman Irani's favourite designer is Anita Dongre when the portly character artist is not wearing a Gabbana.

"My fashion doctrines are comfort and cool chic in a country which is so unbearably hot, " said the actor, clad in white linen trousers and a muted orange and white striped shirt.

Chitrangada Singh swears by denims and T-shirts. And her fashion statement is a combination of the "classic, slightly understated minus the bling look".

"It is a subtle version of the high fashion. My ideal dress is a beautiful off-shoulder western-style gown; or a chiffon or georgette sari, " she said.

The actress said she usually shops for Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger clothes. Chitrangada's colours are black, white and lime.

Stars have their style quirks. Actor Amitabh Bachchan made an impression with his parted hairdo and chunky glasses in the movie "The Last Lear", though he is known for his penchant for formal two piece suits and casual shirt and denims.

But finally, it is the man who makes his clothes. As superstar Shah Rukh Khan said after winning the Personality of the Year Award at the Reebok Zoom Glam Awards 2008: "If you have personal style, whatever you wear will look stylish."

His ponytail, six-packs abs and the cool dude look are still as hot as ever.
