Choosing regional cinema as a launch pad, followed by a decision to work in an English movie, does
not seem to be a right career move for any new-comer, but for Soha Ali Khan, daughter of new Censor
Board chief Sharmila Tagore, it was 'genetically' natural thing to do.
"After all my mother made her presence felt in Benagli cinema before turning towards Hindi film industry,"
says Soha who was in New Delhi recently.
It's all about good scripts and roles that counts, language barrier does not make any difference for me,
she says.
Her penchant for good scripts, thereore, made her choose Los Angeles based documentary film-maker
Rajashree Ojha's English movie Yatna.
"Its a small art-film" is all that she is willing to reveal at the moment about the movie which goes on floors
in November.
Queried about her 'different' career moves, Soha says, "I am bound to get carried away by anyone who
approaches me with script."
However, its Saif Ali Khan, her elder brother and actor who advises her on the 'right people to work with,'
she explains.
But, Soha is quick to add that, only if she is convinced by the project does she give the
green-signal.
"I am very stubborn," she says with a mischievous glint in her eyes.
"I am making my Hindi debut in Anant Mahadevan's Dil Mange More, an out and out commercial movie"
says Soha when asked if art cinema is more important for her.
Dil Mange More is a fun, breezy movie, she says, unlike her Benagli release of Iti Srikanto (Your's Truly,
Srikanto) and yet to be released Rituparno Ghosh's AnatarMahal, both of which are period
films.
Dil....Is a youthful movie starring Shahid Kapoor, Ayesha Takia and Tulip Joshi, says Soha who plays the
role of an ambitious girl hoping to make it big.
"It was difficult when it came to dancing with Shahid, especially when I am not a trained dancer," she
says.
Soha, who has just trained for three months in ballet and for a short period in Kathak, found it difficult to
adjust to the song and dance routine of Bollywood.
"But this is what I always wanted to do", says Soha who quit her cushy job as a private banker to be
under the arc lights.
Why did she take so time in making her debut then?
"Both me and my parents wanted me to lead a normal life, work in a normal "10 to 5" job and put my
education to good use," says Soha who has done her Masters in International Political Science from
London School of Economics.
Apart from cinema, Soha hold academics close to her heart Very much interested in reading and writing,
Soha says she might pursue further education.
Soha, who believes in letting her work speak for her says, she has not joined the industry to do item
numbers.
"I am here to act," says Soha pointedly when asked if she would be comfortable doing the item
numbers.
Prodded further, Soha says she 'might' consider if its intrinsic to the plot, but even then doing a film like
Jism is absolutely no-no on her list.
"I am not comfortable exposing," is all that she has to say.
If Soha appears grounded in her beliefs and values, give credit to her upbringing.
"My parents had sort of semi-retired from the limelight by the time I was born, and hence was raised in a
very normal atmosphere," says Soha.
