Shabana tells: "I think somewhere the warmth attached to these personal events has gone. The hosts handing over the entire celebration to an events manager and then attending the party like a guest is strictly a no-no for me. Everything for Javed's party was attended to by us personally."
While the big bash is open to all of the Akhtar and Azmi families' friends and dear ones, there was another very secret party for the couple's close circle of friends and relatives hosted by Farhan Akhtar at his newly renovated residence in Bandra.
The theme party on the eve of Javed's birthday required all the guests to dress up like characters from the cinema of the 1960s. While Javed Akhtar sported a flaming-orange crinkly kurta to resemble Dev Anand, Shabana Azmi did a takeoff on Sharmila Tagore in "Waqt" -- kurta worn over a tight churidaar, bouffant et al. Shabana's brother Baba was dressed in a canary-yellow kurta, a la Shammi Kapoor.
Laughs Shabana, "We've a huge Shammi Kapoor fan club in our home. My mother is his big fan. In fact, do you know my mother and Shammi Kapoor were auditioned for the roles of Salim and Anarkali in Nandalal-Jaswantlal's 'Anarkali'? They were both rejected. The roles went to Pradeep Kumar and Bina Rai."
The fancy-dress party on Sunday was entirely Shabana Azmi's idea, though she refuses to take credit or talk about it.
Everyone at the party had to perform a dance number from the 1960s. A couple was elected as best dancers and awarded by the 'Javed Akhtar Dance Academy'!
And guess who the judge for the spoofy evening was?
None other than Farah Khan!
