Music legend Bhupen Hazarika passed away at the age of 85 at a Mumbai hospital on Saturday evening, leaving a deep vacuum in the world of music.

Hazarika breathed his last at 4.30pm, according to hospital sources. He was undergoing dialysis at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital after both his kidneys failed.

He was admitted to the hospital on June 29.His condition deteriorated since October 23.

Prominent personalities from various fields mentioned their feelings and memories connected with the singer in a popular micro- blogging site.

Film-maker Mahesh Dutt feels that Bhupen Hazarika was more than an icon: "Bhupen Hazrika was a giant among giants. He was much more than a music icon. He was a social reformer with the heart of a child."

"Fondly recall Bhupen babu flying down from Assam to Mumbai to be on Bournvita Quiz Contest in 1998.Will dedicate BEQuiz national today 2 him, " quiz-master turned politician Derek O'Brien tweeted.

"Bhupendra hazarika passes away....It's a big loss for all music lovers, " music-composer Shantanu Moitra remarked.

"Dr. Bhupen Hazarika's music was unusual and haunting and so was his singing. Great person. Warm, compassionate and helpful. Will miss him, " Anupam Kher tweeted.

Cricketer Muruli Kartik expressed his emotion in his small post: "One of my Favourite singer is No more, Bhupen Hazarika RIP, dil hoon hoon kare, a true maestro."

Akshay Kumar mentioned his fans that how India lost two legendary singers, Jagjit Singh and Bhupen Hazarika in such short period of time.

"After Jagjit Singh, India has lost another musical wonder, RIP Bhupen Hazarika. The man who gave us 'Dil Hoom Hoom', " he remarked.

Hazarika's deep baritone voice had mesmerized audience for ages. In his long career he had received numerous awards. From Padma Bhushan in 2001 to Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1992 to Asom Ratna in 2009, Hazarika got accolades all through his life. He was also the recipient of Sangeet Natak Akademi Award.

He was conferred as the first Indian Music Director for best music Internationally for the film Rudaali at the Asia Pacific International Film Festival at Japan in 1993.

In Feb 2009, the All Assam Students Union felicitated Dr. Hazarika by erecting a life size statue in the heart of Guwahati. It was unveiled by Dr. Hazarika himself.

Hazarika was considered as one of the greatest ballad singers alive in India.

Besides Rudaali in 1993, he was known for his music for 1997 film Darmiyaan, 1998 film Saaz and in 2000 for M F Hussain's Gaja Gamini.

He had also composed music for several Assamese films.
