Sridevi has charmed her fans with her performance in several films like 'Sadma', 'Nagina', 'Mr. India', 'Chandni' and 'ChaalBaaz'.
In 2012, she successfully returned to films after a 15-year hiatus with 'English Vinglish'. The film was declared a hit in India and overseas.
India's highest civilian awards were announced by the government on Friday on various fields with the President approving the conferment of 108 Padma Awards that feature this year names like cricketer Rahul Dravid, fashion designer Ritu Kumar and Bollywood performers like Sridevi, Sharmila Tagore and late superstar Rajesh Khanna.
The awards this year comprise four Padma Vibhushan, 24 Padma Bhushan and 80 Padma Shri Awards. At total of 24 of the awardees are women and the list also includes 11 persons in the category of Foreigners, NRIs, PIOs and Posthumous awardees.
Padma Awards are conferred in three categories, namely, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri.
The Awards are given in various disciplines/ fields of activities, viz- art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, civil service, etc.
'Padma Vibhushan' is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service; 'Padma Bhushan' for distinguished service of high order and 'Padma Shri' for distinguished service in any field.
The awards are announced on the occasion of Republic Day every year. The awards are conferred by the President of India at a function held at Rashtrapati Bhawan sometime around March/ April.
