"I don't believe those tapes are authentic. I believe they're doctored stuff," Preity, upset over the content of the tapes that have been published in a newspaper and aired on television.
She says she may initiate legal action against the newspaper.
"I've finally had a chance to understand the situation. And, man, this is truly sordid, the work of sick minds. Where did these tapes come from? And what's their authenticity?" asks Preity, who returned here last week after holidaying in Italy.
Preity was allegedly referred to in unsavoury language in the tapes, which also refer to Salman's alleged connections with the underworld.
"Why is my name mentioned in them? Just because I was working in a film ('Chori Chori Chupke Chupke') at that time when these conversations are supposed to have taken place?
"Please! Everyone knows I testified against the mob at that time. Could that be a reason why my name has been insinuated and, that too, in such a dirty and derogatory way? I feel so humiliated.
"Such old tapes... Aren't the cops supposed to destroy all taped conversations after three months? Where and how did this newspaper get hold of these so-called conversations with Salman? What sort of journalism is this? I'm very upset with the kind of ethical downgrading that has taken place in the media.
"Any every thing goes in the name of news. And what sort of 'news' is this? Who's interested in a five-year-old conversation that according to me didn't happen? I think it's time to put our foot down, to say once and for all, that enough is enough.
"The media needs to get more accountable. I don't know what action I'm going to take against the people who put my name in these tapes and then put the tapes in print. But this looks like a serious offence and I'm examining the legal epercussions."
As of now Preity has decided to go ahead and do the film "Jaan-e-Man" with Salman.
"I see no reason not to. Because, like I said, I don't believe in the veracity of those tapes. No one would ever dare to speak about me in that fashion.
"This is nothing but sleazy sensationalism. And I'm not the kind of girl who would take such slander lying down."
