The films in question are Apoorva Lakhia's Ek Ajnabee, Rohan Sippy's Bluff Master and Raj Kumar Santoshi's Family.
While the first film featuring Amitabh Bachchan in –the director Lakhia's words—the most kick-ass role of his career-- is being released on 9 December, Bluff Mster and Family have both been locked in for the following Friday , December 16 creating quite a bottleneck of Bachchan films at the boxoffice.
Interestingly Ek Ajnabee which is an out-and-out Amitabh Bachchan flick, also has Abhishek Bachchan making a surprise appearance at the end of the film...So it technically amounts to two films each featuring the senior and junior Bachchan in two weeks.
Adding another twist to this marketing blietzkrieg is Prakash Jha's Ajay Devgan-Bipasha Basu drama Apharan which was earlier scheduled for a Diwali release but has now been shifted to December 2, as it was seen to be not a very Diwali kind of film by distributors.
No, Apharan doesn't feature any of the Bachchans in any part, walk-on or otherwise. But it does have kidnapping at its core—which is also the theme of Lakhia's Ek Ajnabee.
Says Apoorva Lakhia, "I'm glad that Apharan and Ek Ajnabee are coming as solo releases on two Fridays. Yes, both have kidpnapping at its core. But the setting and ambience are totally different. Both are the kind of films that need careful nurturing. As for Bluff Master and Family, they come a week after my film and will have to deal with each other."
One thing is for sure. The post-Diwali scenario at the boxoffice would be as exciting as the Diwali scenario, if not more.
