Ramona Rina Amiri

Age: 24

Occupation: Medical Research Assistant

Height: 172

Ramona was born and grew up in Montreal, the second largest city in Canada and the largest french-speaking country in the America. She moved to Vancouver in 1997 to attend university. Canada is a land of true diversity; it is multicultural, has breathtaking scenery from the rocky mountains to the prairies, to the ocean scenery of the maritimes & atlantic ocean to the far north touching on the arctic ocean. Graduating university with an honours bachelor of science degree in biology, she is currently working as a medical research assistant and enjoying being miss canada, her ambition is to continue working with her children’s fund while completing medical school to become a doctor. Hobbies are: belly dancing and modern dance, cooking, reading, piano, and riding her motorcycle! Sporting interests are: ice hockey, volleyball, badminton, swimming, roller blading and hiking. Ramona is half-assyrian from her father’s side of the family and is proud to speak the language. Her personal motto is “work like you don’t need money, love like you’ve never been hurt, and dance like no one’s watching”.

How would you describe yourself in three words?
I am a compassionate, honest and loyal person. These characteristics definitely help to bring out the best of others, as well as the best of myself. When you have compassion, honesty and loyalty, how can you go wrong in life?

Do you have a special or unusual talent? (what is it?)
Thanks to my arabic and belly dance training, I am a very flexible person. Since belly dance especially involves moving the hips and working out those abdominal muscles, I developed a very unusual talent thanks to all of this exercise: I am able to flip a coin over on my stomach!

Where would you most like to visit in the world and why?
I would love to visit a place in iran called urmieh. My father’s roots are in this magical region, which has been traced back through the bible; many say this region is the original garden of eden. Ancient culture and history have always fascinated me, along with my family’s persian and assyrian heritages, so I would love to visit to find out if I can see a little bit of eden in urmieh!

What is the best thing about your country?
Freedom is of paramount importance in canada: everyone has the freedom of choice, speech, religion and to live without fear of persecution, reprise or prejudice. We are one of the most democratic and progressive countries in the world, and we highly value the individual contributions of all canadians. Most of the world now knows how multicultural canada is, but did you know that over 150 languages are spoken and over 100 religions practiced? The statistics are amazing, but it is absolutely incredible to hear dozens of languages and see so many different types of people right before your eyes, including in cities like my hometown of Vancouver.

What is your favourite…..
Film:
The Thomas Crown Affair, starring Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo. It is like a thriller that is more like puzzle you have to piece together; it’s a fascinating movie.
Music: I absolutely LOVE Arabic music. I also at times seem to forget that we are in the new millennium, as 80s music is still one of my favourites. I also enjoy house and dance music, anything upbeat that I can dance to!
Singer/band: this is where my love for the 80s comes through: I love George Michael and especially Prince!
Book: “The Power of One” by Bryce Courtenay. The incredibly moving story of a young english boy who is sent to a boer boarding school during the second world war. While living through difficult times, young peekay, the main character, inspires all readers with his perseverance and strength.

If you were granted one wish, what would it be?
It’s a simple one: good health and happiness for all. All of the possessions in the world do not mean anything without our health. It is a straightforward, simple and honest wish.

If you were stuck on a desert island with one other person (famous or not) whom would you choose?
Any of the winners from the television series “survivor”! Who better to be stuck on an isolated island with than someone who already has experience living there? As long as they don’t “vote me off” by throwing me in the ocean, i’m sure we could work together to survive and thrive.

What is your message to all the other miss world contestants?
As miss world contestants and ambassadors for our nations, we are all in a unique position to make a positive difference in the world. Imagine what we can do, with or without the miss world crown. I am not only looking forward to meeting all of you, and learning about the cultures of your countries, I am also eager to get to know each of you as individuals.

You’re judging the final five contestants, which question would you ask the finalists?
After spending the last month in china, what similarities are there between your own country and china?
