Environmental Concern:
I believe that forest destruction is a huge problem, which needs to be seriously addressed in order to prevent more damage being done to an essential element of the earth. In particular, the Amazon Rainforest, branded the “Lungs of the World” has lost over 600,000 square kilometers of forest since the 1970’s. This damage has had many harmful effects- other species are at risk, medicines that originate from the trees of the rainforest are being lost, and, perhaps most importantly, the climate change associated with loss of trees has the potential to have devastating effects on us all. I would like to create a project that aims to protect areas of the rainforest with important habitats, in order to save endangered species of plants and animals from harm. I would also like to work towards rehabilitating forest land that has already been cleared, in order to redress at least some of the climate change which has already occurred.
What makes you proud of your country:
Ireland is one of the most beautiful countries in the world. It strikes a unique balance between a deep Celtic heritage and a modern way of living. Dublin and Belfast provide the best of city living, boasting world class entertainment and restaurants offering the freshest seafood. Ireland has a well deserved reputation for having the most friendly and hospitable people, and we warmly welcome visitors from all over the world. A huge attraction for many visitors is the natural beauty of Ireland’s landscape. The Giant’s Causeway became known as “The Eighth Wonder of the World” in the 1700’s for its’ arrangement of stone columns, and the folklore behind this ancient landmark is equally fascinating. I am very proud to represent a country which embodies a rich culture, beautiful countryside, and of course, such friendly and generous people. I am glad to say that Ireland, once visited, will never be forgotten.
