Joy was born in the capital city of St Lucia, castries, but grew up in the small fishing village of Canaries, situated on the west coast of the island. It is an island of spectacular scenery, golden sandy beaches with crystal clear turquoise waters. Having completed her education joy is currently employed as a laboratory technician and teacher at a secondary school, it is her ambition to continue her studies in chemistry and biochemistry as a basis to move on to a career in forensic science. Joy enjoys looking after her eight pet fish and her cat named whisky; listening to jazz as it uplifts her soul and she like the unusual rhythms and spontaneity of this type of music. She also has a passion for art and a special talent for drawing and painting. Favourite food is a local dish of breadfruit and salt fish prepared with a sauce made from coconut milk and local seasoning peppers. Her motto is “satisfy your inner child”.

How would you describe yourself in three words?
Spontaneous, curious, jovial

Do you have a special or unusual talent? (what is it?)
Drawing and painting.

Where would you most like to visit in the world and why?
Europe for its romanticism, extraordinary architecture and rich history so that I could visit some of the world’s most famous at galleries and museums which would definitely satisfy my passion for art.

What is the best thing about your country?
Its unique and breathtaking natural features such as the world’s only drive-in volcano and the majestic twin peaks called the pitons, recently awarded world heritage status, not to mention cascading waterfalls and lush green rainforest with rare animal species such as the national parrot, the amazing heritage and two nobel laureates!

If you were granted one wish, what would it be?
To take away the pain and suffering, in whatever form, of the world’s children. If you were stuck on a desert island with one other person (famous or not whom would you choose?
Well mac gyver, he would be able to get us off the island. But seriously my cousin, for the great companionship and complicity we share added to the fact that her resourcefulness would be a definite factor to our survival.

What is your message to all the other miss world contestants?
Make the most of the opportunity to empower yourselves and those around you and let us prove to the world that despite our differences and extremely diverse backgrounds, people can unite, make a difference and help make the world a better place.

You’re judging the final five contestants, which question would you ask the finalists?
In the midst of all the recent global tragedies, wars and human suffering, what would you say to convince someone that the world is still a beautiful place?
