Miss Iowa
Emily Nicholas
What is your hometown like?
My hometown is remembered for being the last place where Buddy Holly along with Richie Valens and J.P. "the Big Bopper" Richardson played their last concert at the Surf Ballroom. Sadly, the plane they were in crashed in my grandfather's soybean farm. Clear Lake offers endless family attractions especially in the summer when our population actually doubles because of people drawn to the sun and the fun, like boating, wind sailing and fishing. I love that Clear Lake maintains its small town character while striving to be in tune with new technology like the Cerro Gordo County Wind farm project. I am proud that this project brings green electric power to 20,000 homes and businesses. Most importantly, the real strengths of my hometown are found in its excellent school system and family-friendly community.
What were you like when you were a child?
A word that best describes me as a child is firecracker. I was an independent, energetic, yet well-behaved girl who had a lot of spunk. My mom claims my first words were, "I'll do it myself!"
Who is the most influential person in your life?
I have a friend named Sean who has influenced me in a very special way because he has had to overcome many obstacles during his lifetime. Sean's parents were 12- and 13-year-old drug addicts when he was born which left him with several disabilities. He has lived his entire 36 years of life unable to walk, see, smell or talk. He never ceases to amaze me with his positive attitude and contagious smile. He has so little and yet is so rich in the things that count.
What is one thing about you that people you meet may not immediately realize?
First, that I love to mow the lawn. Don't you love the smell of fresh cut grass? Also, I made Iowa history when I was crowned Miss Iowa 2006. My sister was Miss Iowa 2004, and no two sisters have ever held the title of Miss Iowa.
What was one defining moment in your life?
Last summer, as I stood captivated in front of the microphone at the Bennett House in Franklin, Tenn., I thought, "There are so many people out there dreaming they could be doing this, and here I am!" At that moment, I knew it was what I wanted to do the rest of my life.
What was one defining moment in your life?
The significance of giving my time, energy, passion and commitment.
What was one defining moment in your life?
One of my goals as Miss America 2007 would be to help every state follow in Iowa's footsteps and see Character Counts! incorporated into youth programs nationwide. I would also cherish every opportunity to encourage and entertain our servicemen and women both here and abroad.
