Brittany Lietz

What is your hometown like?
Quiet and simple. It is a small town where everyone knows everyone else. We all grew up together and went to the same elementary, middle and high schools. When I won Miss Maryland, the entire town was so supportive of my new adventure and made me truly feel as though I was representing my hometown proudly.

What were you like when you were a child?
A ham. I loved to perform. I loved dancing and putting on shows for my family and friends. Yet, I was also very dedicated to school. Education is so important to me, and as a child, I knew that all of my hard work then would pay off later. I was the type of kid who always wanted to grow up. My mother always told me I was far beyond my childhood years.

Who is the most influential person in your life?
Above and beyond, my mother. She has taught me everything in life that makes me the person I am today. She has taught me the power of patience and the strength of the mind. Through all times, good and bad, she has stood by my side to remind me that everything would be just fine and to keep pushing forward. She is my rock in life and will forever be my best friend.

What is one thing about you that people you meet may not immediately realize?
I love schoolwork and studying. I try to learn something new every day, and studying helps me to do that. I am the person who would stay in on a Friday night to study my nursing notes for particular reason.

What was one defining moment in your life?
The day I was diagnosed with cancer. It was the worst and best day of my life. The worst day because I fear the day I might have to go through treatment again, and yet the best day because I am now a stronger person and I can use my story to save the lives of others.

What was one defining moment in your life?
I am even stronger and more independent than I had thought myself to be. And that I can accomplish anything I set my mind to. Lots of hard work and dedication go into preparing and competing in pageants and if you are willing to do that work, you are more than willing to fulfill the job of your title! I love this work and I thank God every day for allowing me to be here to do just this.

What was one defining moment in your life?
I want to spread the word of skin cancer as far and as wide as I can. I want to help save lives and enrich people with idea that they can help me do that. The more lives that are able to educate, the more lives we are able to save! This disease hit close to home, and I never want anyone or any family to have to go through what my family and I have had to endure. By sharing my story, I hope to bring a face to skin cancer and help end this serious and lethal epidemic. I also want to encourage young women to participate in the Miss America program and teach them of the opportunities it truly offers to women in today's society. It opens new doors for you ever single day.
