Name one person, other than your parents, who has had the most influence on your life. Why?
Serena Does, my best friend and confidant for almost six years now. She is the one person who constantly challenges my thoughts and ideas. It is thanks to her that I see the world today the way I do and in which I base my life on compassion, empathy, mindfulness and righteousness.
What is the most interesting or unique thing that has ever happened to you (aside from winning your title) and/or what is the most interesting thing about you?
As an Ambassador of Goodwill in my country I was able to share my knowledge and experience on dreams, motivation and perseverance with young teens during different talks at different high schools on the island.
What is your career ambition and what are you doing or plan to do to accomplish that goal?
I aspire to take part in the fashion business as a model. I had given up on this dream for a while because I had decided to continue my academic career in Holland. It didn’t turn out to be as fulfilling as I had hoped it would, and I am now very convinced that moving to Holland and stepping away from the entertainment business was probably a not-so-wise career move. But I’ve been given a second chance to get back on that track by once again taking part in a prestigious and glamorous pageant such as the Miss Universe Pageant which I hope will open the necessary opportunities to step back into the entertainment and fashion world.
Are you currently a student? If yes, where? What is your area of study?
The Hague, Holland, Communications.
List any interesting or unsual jobs you may have had.
Main host for a local TV programme called ‘Poets TV’ where I got to travel around the world to interview succesful Arubans living abroad.
Special work with the Aruban community as an Ambassador of Goodwill.
Local photo and runway model
Describe your childhood home and living conditions. Were you raised with a large family with lots of brothers and sisters?
I was raised by my mother who is Aruban and my father who is Chinese, along with my younger brother and sister. My parents have been happily married for over 23 years and me and my brother and sister are lucky to have been raised in such a loving and positive environment. As a family we do much more together than just spending holiday time with one another. We eat breakfast and lunch together and we involve eachother as much as we can in many of our daily activities. Because of my parents’ different backgrounds we have a mix of two cultures at home, which also meant a large variation of delicious foods from the Aruban and Chinese kitchen. At home we grew up speaking 4 different languages; English, Papiamento, Spanish, Dutch. What’s interesting is that we tend to speak only English to our father and only Papiamento to our mother. Spanish we picked up because of the Spanish television programmes and Dutch we had learned at school. Only our father speaks Chinese and we have learned a word or two, but we mostly only hear him speak it to our grandmother, uncles and aunts.
What one word describes you best?
