Singer Nick Carter has revealed that his wife Lauren previously suffered a miscarriage, but she is now 16 weeks pregnant with a son.

The news that Nick is going to be a father came out last month, but the gender of the baby was not known. They found out about it during a live TV show.

On Monday's episode of "Dancing with the Stars", the Backstreet Boy officially announced that he and his wife are expecting, reports people.com.

`We've been trying to have a baby for about a year now. It's been rocky, to be quite honest with you. There have been times when we thought it wouldn't happen,` the 35-year-old said.

Lauren, 32, said the struggles to have a baby have been particularly tough on her husband.

`It was really hard on Nick. Just watching him get so excited about something, and see him get so hurt, it was hard,` she said.

After an emotional dance dedicated to his wife, Nick joined Lauren backstage, where the couple learned the sex of their baby on live TV. They opened a giant gift box, and a dozen blue balloons floated to the ceiling.

`It still seems unbelievable,` Nick said.

`My wife and I are happy to personally announce that we are pregnant,` Carter said in a statement following the show. `It has been our dream to have a family together and we cannot wait to welcome our first child into the world.`
