Greta Gerwig first broke into the business with mumblecore classic 'LOL', finally finding mainstream acclaim for her portrayal of Frances, a struggling (almost) adult in Noah Baumbach's 'Frances Ha' (2014). Gerwig co-wrote her breakout role and finally went on to write and direct 'Lady Bird' based on her own experiences. Greta continues to bring to us tales of adolescence, this time adapting Louisa May Alcott's beloved novel 'Little Women' for the screen.
In an exclusive look, Entertainment Tonight has revealed the loving and exuberant March sisters Jo (Saoirse Ronan), Meg (Emma Watson), Amy (Florence Pugh), and Beth (Eliza Scanlen). The footage begins with Jo's voiceover, stating her desire of writing a novel based on her personal life. Laura Dern, who plays Mary March, mentions to Laurie (Timothee Chalamet) that "my girls have a way of getting into mischief" to which he cheekily replies, " Well, so do I."
We also, see Jo going on a tirade against the Puritanical view of women, asserting their rights as independent, resilient, and intelligent beings. Her intentions of making on her own are met by the opposition of her antiquated Aunt March (played by Meryl Streep !), who believes Jo would need a suitable husband to make her dreams come true. Jo falls for Laurie and navigates a stormy romance, as the rest of sisters come to terms with themselves amidst it all.
'Little Women' is written and directed by Oscar-nominated Greta Gerwig and stars a magnificent ensemble cast of Meryl Streep, Laura Dern, Saorise Ronan, Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, Eliza Scanlen, Timothee Chalamet, Bob Odenkirk, Chris Cooper, James Norton, Louis Garrel, Abby Quin among others.
With Amy Pascal, Denise De Novi, Robin Swicord, Arnon Milchan producing, Little Women has an upcoming Christmas release of 25 December, just in time for Oscar season.
