`We're going to need a bigger slingshot.`

Hey, remember how 'Angry Birds' used to be a big deal back in 2009? Yeah, not so much lately as Candy Crush has taken over and kicked these birdies to the curb. My mistake, flightless birdies. For those who don't remember, the objective of the game is to eliminate the enemy piggies with the help of birds of various abilities via a slingshot. As you move up the ladder, you get a different set of birds each with its power.

For Rovio, this game has been a constant cash cow and has gone on to spawn its own spin-off games, not to mention the merchandise profits it has reaped. So it doesn't come as a surprise it would eventually adapt it into a movie.

And oh dear God, did they do it!

The first movie was about Red (Jason Sudeikis), the only 'angry bird' in an otherwise happy island of flightless birds. Clearly, he has no love for his own but becomes a hero unwillingly after he saves his island from the evil schemes of the Green piggies.

And in the second part no one asked for, (unless you happen to in the in ages between 4-8 or have children or nephews or nieces in that demographic), Red is back! Yeah, he's pretty much doing the saving the world/ pranking thing along with his buddies Chuck (Josh Gad) and Bomb (Danny McBride). Yes, it is mentioned they still have anger issues, but I guess that can be overlooked when saving everyone falls on your sensitive-bird shoulders?

So amidst the pranking and hating and almost wiping out the bird and pig population on both sides (remember, this is a kid's movies. But more on that later), they soon witness massive balls of ice start to crash land on their respective islands. (Yeah, there's a Bird island and a Pig island). Soon a truce is proposed by King Leonard (Bill Hader), of the Pig island. For Red, this not good news, for that was his claim to fame.


However, he is called back into the line of duty when Leonard informs him of the presence of another island called Eagle Island. Zeta (Leslie Jones) presides over it, sick of her neighbors' bickering she vows to destroy them and turn their islands into a personal vacation spot. Soon, Red bands with both allies and enemies and sets out to protect their respective worlds. There's also a sub-plot involving three hatchlings, with one of them, Zoe (Brooklynn Prince) trying to get back her sisters, whom she casually used for her games of make-believe.

Perhaps what the audience should note most importantly that under the veil of kid's move, there's a lot of adult humor. The innuendo unleashes like hot lava on a bad day, and it will leave you flustered. Not because these jokes are there, but mostly because these jokes are going for cheap laughs. Sure, the kids will laugh at people slipping on banana peels or anything, but do you really want them to see naked animal butts and scar them for life? Food for thought.

'The Angry Birds' is a movie made for kids, but don't believe everything they tell you. It is narrative that even for a kid's movie seems very dumb there times that it takes its demographic for granted.

What works for 'The Angry Birds 2 Movie' is its stellar comedic cast. Jason Sudeikis is perfect as the blowhard Red and riffs all well with Josh Gad (Chuck) and Danny McBride (Bomb). Everyone is pretty good here, but Leslie Jones as Zeta kills it! The addition of Awkwafina, Rachel Bloom, Sterling K. Brown, and Eugenio Derbez is a cherry on the top. The animation is intricate and serves well to the games that lead to its inception and luckily doesn't overstay its welcome. The three little hatchlings are pretty adorable, and might even be the only genuinely redeeming factor in the movie

It is disappointing to see that the finest moments in this movie come not in the form of jokes or emotional resonance, but pop-music which must cost the makers a (many) pretty penny (pennies).

As of now 'The Angry Birds 2 Movie' sits as the best performer in terms of films based on a videogame with a 63% Rotten Tomatoes rating. But those who know, know that the bar was never set high for movies based on videogames, or in this case, an android app.
