Marvel Cinematic Universe has established itself as a cultural phenomenon and undisputed conquer of Box-Office. However, in terms of diversity and LGBT representation, it has a long way to go. While 'Black Panther' and Director Joe Russo's nameless METS fan character in 'Avengers: Endgame' (MCU's first openly gay character) have opened the doors, Kristen Stewart's experience presents a different perspective.
During a recent interview for Harper Bazaar UK, Stewart revealed the pressure she faced for landing a Marvel movie. She spoke candidly, explaining `I have fully been told, 'If you just, like, do yourself a favor, and don't go out holding your girlfriend's hand in public, you might get a Marvel movie.' I don't want to work with people like that.`
She then added "I was informed by an old-school mentality, which is-you want to preserve your career and your success and your productivity, and there are people in the world who don't like you, and they don't like that you date girls, and they don't like that you don't identify as a quote, unquote 'lesbian,' but you also don't identify as a quote, unquote 'heterosexual.' And people like to know stuff, so what the fuck are you?`
The 'Twilight' star has had a hard time adjusting to being famous. But over the years, she has come to terms with herself. She claimes that it's been liberating not worrying about the onslaught of questions aimed at her sexuality. Clearly, Stewart has made a healthy choice by giving precedence to personal over professional. Not being a part of MCU hasn't affected her career in the least as the actress has gone on to give exceptional (but sadly, understated) performances in 'Clouds of Sils Maria' (2014), 'Personal Shopper'(2016), and 'Certain Women' (2016).
Stewart will be seen in Seberg(2019) as the French New Wave Icon Jean Seberg who became the target of the F.B.I. investigation. She will also be seen in the reboot of 'Charlie's Angels' and Sci-fi 'Underwater.'
